The Shepherds of Israel

Ezekiel 34

The Lord rebukes the shepherds of Israel for feeding themselves while neglecting and scattering the flock, and promises to seek out his sheep himself, gather them from among the nations, and set up one shepherd, his servant David, to tend them under an everlasting covenant of peace.

ThomsonBehold you devour the milk and clothe yourselves with the fleeces, and that which is fat you slaughter; but My flock you do not feed.

Thomsonso that My flock is dispersed for want of shepherds, and is become a prey to all the wild beasts of the field.

ThomsonAs I live, saith the Lord, Because My flock is become a prey, and My sheep are become meat for all the wild beasts of the field, beyond what they would be were there no shepherds; and the shepherds have not looked out for My sheep, and the shepherds have fed themselves and have not tended My sheep;

Thomsonthus saith the Lord God: Behold I am against the shepherds; and I will exact My sheep out of their hands, and discharge them from feeding My sheep: and these shepherds shall no longer feed them. I will rescue My sheep out of their mouth, that they may no longer be food for them.

ThomsonAs a shepherd searcheth for his flock when mist and murky air overspread his scattered sheep: so will I diligently seek My sheep, and bring them from every place, where they have been dispersed in the day of mist and murky darkness.
BrentonAs the shepherd seeks his flock, in the day when there is darkness and cloud, in the midst of the sheep that are separated: so will I seek out my sheep, and will bring them back from every place where they were scattered in the day of cloud and darkness.

ThomsonWas it not enough for you, that you fed in a rich pasture, but you must tread down the leavings of your pasture with your feet? Or that you have drunk of the standing water, but you must trouble the residue with your feet?
BrentonAnd is it not enough for you that ye fed on the good pasture, that ye trampled with your feet the remnant of your pasture? and that ye drank the standing water, that ye disturbed the residue with your feet?

Thomsonand remove the wild beasts entirely out of the land; so that they [the flock] may dwell in the desert and sleep in the woods.
