The Census and the Plague

2 Samuel 24

The Lord's anger burns against Israel again, and Satan incites David to number the people, so he sends Joab to conduct a census across Israel and Judah that takes over nine months and returns a very large count of fighting men. Stricken with guilt over the census, David is offered a choice of three punishments by the prophet Gad and chooses a three-day plague, after which the Lord's angel is stayed at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, where David buys the site, builds an altar, offers sacrifices, and the plague ends.
