The Burning of the Scroll

Jeremiah 43

Jeremiah dictates all the words the Lord has spoken to him to his scribe Baruch, who writes them on a scroll and reads them aloud in the temple and before the assembled princes, who in turn report them to King Joakim. As the scroll is read to him, the king cuts it into pieces with a penknife and burns it in the fire, prompting the Lord to have Jeremiah dictate a second, expanded scroll and pronounce judgment on Joakim, that none of his line will sit on David's throne.
