The Fallen King of Babylon
Isaiah 14
After promising that the Lord will again show mercy to Jacob and give Israel rest from its hard servitude, Isaiah takes up a taunt against the king of Babylon, picturing the dead kings of the earth rising to mock him as he who once said he would ascend above the stars is instead brought down to the grave like a discarded corpse. The chapter closes with the Lord's determination to destroy Babylon and Assyria and with a briefer word against the Philistines, who are told not to rejoice, for their own affliction is still to come.
