The Rod of Assyria

Isaiah 10

Isaiah denounces corrupt rulers who oppress the poor, then declares that Assyria, though raised up as the rod of the Lord's anger against a sinful nation, will itself be punished for its arrogant boasting of conquest, as a tool cannot glorify itself above the one who wields it. He promises that only a remnant of Israel will survive to truly trust in the Lord, and closes by tracing the advance of an invading army city by city toward Jerusalem, whose proud and lofty people will be brought low.

Thomsonand God will raise against them a scourge similar to that of Madiam at the place of affliction. When his [the Assyrian’s] wrath shall be in the western road—in the high way leading to Egypt;
