Israel Demands a King

1 Samuel 8

When Samuel is old and his sons prove corrupt judges, the elders of Israel ask him to set a king over them like the other nations; the Lord tells Samuel this is a rejection of his own rule, and though Samuel warns at length what a king will take from the people, they insist, and the Lord tells him to grant their request.
